Head towards the bright lights of a land-based or online casino and you'll find a bustling floor packed with awesome chances to experience epic entertainment. We're talking slot machines, casino classics and slick card-and-dice tables, all offering the chance to land an exciting prize.
But there's more than just games in store. Standing to attention on casino floors and in live casino streaming studios alike, you'll find a team of professional dealers charged with delivering the action. Pardon the pun, but these folks are big players in the casino industry! And they dress the part too. Typically wearing their finest suit and proudly bearing their name on their lapel, casino dealers are a flash group that are easy to spot.
It's easy to see why so many are keen to make the jump from casino player to casino dealer. If you fancy your odds of switching sides at the table, then you're in the right place. Keep scrolling to check out our guide to becoming a live casino dealer.
All casino game tables need someone to spin the wheel, deal the cards and roll the dice – and that's where dealers come in.
The duties of a casino dealer don't stop there though. Nuh-uh. As well as triggering the next move in the game, dealers are also in charge of keeping things running smoothly. That means solving any problems that pop up at lightning speed, from technical difficulties to disagreements between players.
Ever played host to a large group of people all flexing their competitive spirits at once? A casino dealer has! A well-trained dealer will be a champ at delivering fun entertainment through conversation as well as the game at hand.
So, you're interested in what it takes to become a dealer. Well, strap in buds, because it takes more than you might think! Sure, you can be a dab-hand at playing the games, but the requirements listed on a standard casino dealer's job description go beyond betting skills.
Here's the top skills you'll need to get down before applying:
This one isn't a skill, but it's arguably the biggest blocker to entrance y'all could find: Your age. Like alcohol, casino games can only be accessed once you're over a certain age. And that covers dealers, too.
Here in the UK, the rules are that players and dealers need to be at least over 18 years old. Across the pond, the gambling rules are slightly different, and most states require people to wait until they're at least 21 years old.
Checks go beyond just your age – many casinos will also want to see a clean criminal record and UK establishments will ask for a license from the Gambling Commission granting you the right to deal.
Don't sweat it if you weren't a top dog at college. Unlike many other careers, casino dealers don't need a degree to their name. A solid set of GCSEs are nice, but even better is experience in a tailored training program designed to teach you how to become a professional dealer. And you'll need to be a (semi) maths whizz to be able to calculate payouts on the fly.
It's a standard question in any job interview: Why are you interested in the role? Casino establishments want folks that are passionate about the industry and sharing their passion with new players. You should have a good understanding of the games you'll be running, including the rules and odds.
Remember we said dealers are in charge of delivering an awesome experience overall? That's where your people skills come in. Players come from far and wide, and all walks of life, to enjoy a game at a land-based or online casino, and it's your job to make everyone feel welcome. That requires a super friendly, patient and understanding personality who can clearly communicate the results of the game.
If you prefer the idea of working in a live studio rather than in a land-based casino, then you'll need an extra set of skills to your name. Since live studios work with computers and streaming software, technical knowledge and experience is a hot ask for any online dealer hoping to step behind the camera.
The best skill of them all? Real, hands-on experience of being a dealer. We don't mean you need to have held a full-time job as a casino dealer before to start out, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask for some work experience at your local casino.
Once you're qualified as a fresh-faced casino dealer, you'll be free to walk onto the floor (as long as you're employed by the establishment) and dive into the action!
The most common casino games you'll work on include all the classics, such as blackjack, roulette, craps and, of course, the old-school staple that is poker. Live casino dealers can expect some modern additions to the collection, though, as interactive game shows have become a hit favourite with players joining in the fun from home.
From guiding players around the MONOPOLY board to opening boxes in Deal or No Deal and spin giant wheels to reveal prizes, there's plenty of excitement to be had has a live casino dealer nowadays!
