England open their World Cup campaign against Croatia, a side they've come up against more than once in recent years. It's a serious test right out of the blocks: Croatia have a strong recent World Cup ability, and this is no gentle introduction to the tournament.
Date: Wednesday 17 June
Kick-off: 21:00 BST
Venue: Dallas Stadium, Arlington, Texas
England's opener is one of the standout group-stage ties of the tournament's first week, staged at the largest ground (94,000 seats) at World Cup 2026. The retractable roof and air conditioning mean the Texas heat won't be a factor, so both sides can focus on the football rather than the conditions.
This is the fifth meeting between the nations in eight years, and the previous four have rarely been straightforward. Croatia famously came from behind to knock England out at the semi-final stage of the 2018 World Cup, before England most recently got the better of themwith a narrow win in their Euro 2020 group opener.
Croatia's ability on the biggest stage is not in doubt. Finalists in 2018 and third-placed in 2022, they've made a habit of going far at the World Cup, driven by a midfield that prizes control and composure. For England, an opening-game test against opposition of this quality is the kind of marker they'll want to lay down early under Thomas Tuchel.
England arrive with genuine squad depth, especially in midfield, captained by Harry Kane and built around the experience of players who have been here before. Tuchel will be looking for a confident start, with the balance of his midfield and the threat of his wide players likely to shape how England approach the game.
Croatia, as ever, will look to their experienced core to dictate the tempo. If they're allowed to settle on the ball and control the rhythm, they can frustrate anyone, which makes England's energy and intensity in the middle of the park so important.
England go into the opener as favourites to get their campaign off to a winning start, though Croatia's tournament know-how means this is no formality. Markets for the match – full-time result, BTTS, Draw No Bet and more – are all available now, and you can find them here.
