Every four years, football takes over the world. And this year’s edition is the biggest yet: 48 teams playing 104 matches across three countries. All for one trophy.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July across Canada, Mexico and the United States. For the first time, 48 teams compete across 104 matches. That means more groups, more fixtures, more markets and more ways to get involved than any World Cup before it.

Here's the tournament at a glance:
Host countries: Canada, Mexico, United States
Dates: 11 June – 19 July 2026
Teams: 48
Matches: 104
Format: 12 groups of four, with group winners, runners-up and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 32
This expanded format changes the landscape. With 12 groups and more routes through to the knockout stages than ever before, there are more ways to get involved across the group stage than any previous World Cup.
The World Cup brings with it a full range of markets, from pre-tournament outrights to in-play betting on group stage fixtures. Here's what you can expect:
Available before and throughout the tournament, outright markets let you bet on the bigger picture rather than individual matches.
Outright Winner — back a nation to lift the trophy in New York on 19 July
To Reach the Final — a shorter-odds alternative to the outright winner for the team who might fall short on the night
To Reach the Semi-Finals — opens up the market further, with more possible routes to a return
Group Winner — with 12 groups and some heavyweight clashes already scheduled, the Group Winner market gives you a way to back a nation to top their section
To Qualify from Group — back a team to make it through the group stage
Top Scorer — back the player you think will finish the tournament with the most goals to their name
The same markets you'd find on any football fixture, applied to every game across the tournament.
Back a win for either side or a draw. The most straightforward way to bet on any World Cup fixture. In the group stage, a draw is always a genuine possibility, and the context of the standings can influence how both sides approach the match.
New to football betting markets? Our What is 1X2 Betting? guide has the information you need.
Remove the draw from the equation. If the match ends level, your stake is returned. The odds are shorter than a standard 1X2, but the draw is no longer a risk. A useful market when you want to back a team to win while accounting for the possibility of a tight finish.
Bet on whether both sides find the net, regardless of the result. No result attached, just goals. With 48 teams and a variety of attacking styles on show, BTTS is one of the busier markets across the group stage.
Predict whether the match goes over or under a set number of goals. Worth considering alongside team news and the context of the group standings, as motivation can have a significant effect on how open a game is, particularly in the final round of group fixtures.
Call the exact final score for longer odds. The harder the call, the more you stand to gain if the bet lands.

Back a specific player to open the scoring or to score at any point in the match. Player markets are some of the most popular across a major tournament like the World Cup.
Combine multiple match bets for enhanced odds, or build a custom bet across different markets in the same fixture. With matches running across multiple time zones throughout the group stages, there's no shortage of opportunities.

Live odds that move with the action. React to what's happening on the pitch - not what might - at any point in the match.
The jump from 32 to 48 teams changes more than just the number of matches. The structure of the tournament can affect how markets are priced and how individual fixtures play out.
Each of the 12 groups contains four teams. The top two in each group advance automatically. The eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also qualify for the round of 32, which means even a team that finishes third has a reasonable chance of progressing, provided they've picked up enough points.
If teams finish level on points at the end of the group stage, FIFA separates them using the following criteria:
Step one:
Points won in head-to-head matches
Goal difference in head-to-head matches
Goals scored in head-to-head matches
If that doesn't separate them, step two looks at the broader group picture:
Step two:
Goal difference across all group matches
Goals scored across all group matches
Fair play record – yellow and red cards received by players and team officials
If teams are still level after step two, there's one final decider:
Step three:
FIFA world rankings, based on the most recently published edition at the time of the tournament.
Eight of the 12 third-placed teams progress to the round of 32. To determine which eight, FIFA ranks all third-placed finishers using the following criteria:
Points won across all group matches
Goal difference across all group matches
Goals scored across all group matches
Fair play record – yellow and red cards received by players and team officials
FIFA world rankings, if teams are still level after all of the above
From the round of 32 onwards, it's straight elimination. No draws. If the match is level after 90 minutes, it goes to extra time and then, if needed, a penalty shootout. Draw No Bet is not available in knockout rounds for that reason, but the To Qualify market covers the full path through including extra time and penalties.
With matches running simultaneously in the final round of group games, the live standings can shift quickly. A goal in one game can change the qualification picture for teams in a concurrent fixture, which means in-play markets can move fast.
Live odds adjust in real time as the action unfolds. At Bally Bet, you can follow the action and place in-play bets across all 104 World Cup fixtures. Keep an eye on the live standings alongside the match, particularly in the final round of group games where the broader picture is just as relevant as the 90 minutes taking place in front of you.
Betting on the World Cup has a different feel to a regular domestic season. The tournament is condensed into just over a month, which means there's no time for teams to recover form. Every fixture carries weight from the start, with national pride at stake.
And with matches played across three countries spanning different climates and time zones, factors like heat, humidity and travel schedules can have a genuine bearing on how teams perform.
Odds tell you two things: how likely a result is to happen and how much you stand to win if it does. The lower (or 'shorter') the odds, the more likely the outcome. The higher ('longer') the odds, the bigger the potential return.
A £10 bet at 2/1 pays out £30. That’s £20 profit plus your £10 stake back. At 1/2, a £10 bet returns £15 – £5 profit plus your stake. The shorter the odds, the smaller the profit relative to your stake.

A single is the simplest bet there is: one selection, one outcome. The most natural starting point is a match result. Back a team to win a group stage fixture, and if they do, you get paid.
From there, the same logic applies to bigger calls: a team to win their group, reach the final or go all the way. One selection, one outcome, whatever the stage of the tournament.
An accumulator combines multiple selections into one bet. All of them need to win for the bet to land, but the odds multiply together for a bigger potential return. With matches across multiple groups on the same day, the World Cup group stage presents lots of opportunities for acca betting.
A bet builder lets you combine different markets from within the same match. You can back a team to win, a specific player to score and over 2.5 goals in the same fixture, all in one bet. All selections need to land for the bet to win.
If you'd rather not build from scratch, our pre-built World Cup bet builders are available for fixtures throughout the tournament, ready to add to your slip whenever you want to get involved.
The betting itself works the same way as any football market. Choose your selection, enter your stake and confirm your bet. Your stake is locked in once placed, and your returns are calculated at the odds available when you bet. Most match markets settle as soon as the final whistle goes; in-play bets settle as soon as the event in question occurs.
When your bet wins, your returns land in your account straight away. You can withdraw them or put them on the next fixture, and during the group stage, there's usually one not too far off.
